Tylosaurus proriger “Sophie”

Tylosaurus proriger

Specimen: Tylosaurus proriger “Sophie”

Locality: Pecan Gap formation in the Taylor group of SE Texas.

Description: Size: Approximately 13-14 meters long (41 feet) with a 1.75 meter long skull. Can be interactively mounted as the predator of Xiphactinus (giant fish) skeletons, or in battle with another large mosasaur. This is an extraordinarily well-preserved specimen from southeast Texas which rivals the world record for size. Distortion of the bones is at a minimum, and the vast majority of the skeleton is present, missing primarily distal caudals, which have been reconstructed. Scavenging of the carcass by sharks, plus evidence of bone necrosis (the bends) or calcium deficiency from the production of offspring makes this an important specimen with a great story to tell. Premaxilla and both maxillae preserve numerous abscessed but healed injuries from snout-wrestling.
